WK Bath Stool by Wataru Kumano
In Japan, bathing is not just about cleansing the body—it's a cherished ritual. After soaking in a warm tub, one moves to the washing area to cleanse. This unique style of bathing, rarely seen elsewhere in the world, has given rise to its own set of specialized tools. One such essential is the bath stool. Hinoki, with its smooth texture, natural antibacterial and rot-resistant properties, and calming aroma—thanks to compounds like α-pinene and terpinene—has long been a favorite material for bathtubs and bath accessories.
Designer Wataru Kumano, reflecting on his own bathing habits while living with his family in the natural surroundings of Nagano, took on the challenge of reinterpreting the traditional hinoki bath stool for modern life. Keeping the simple structure intact, Kumano focused on enhancing comfort and ergonomics.
While most ready-made bath stools are low and require bending over, the WK Bath Stool(L) is designed with a seat height of 360 mm, making it easier to use. To ensure stability at this taller height, the seat is made slightly more compact. Maintenance and ease of cleaning were also carefully considered. The stool's parts are designed to be as simple as possible. The seat is angled and includes a central groove, allowing water to drain naturally and reducing the effort needed to keep it clean.
The stool is also flat-packed for easy self-assembly, allowing users to enjoy both the tactile experience of hinoki and the satisfaction of building their own furniture. Lightweight and neatly boxed, it also makes an excellent gift for housewarmings, weddings, or new births. With its elegant, compact design, the stool can be used beyond the bath—as a convenient seat for putting on shoes at the entrance, or even as a side table beside a bed or sofa.
