A Triangle That Brings Rhythm and Comfort to Everyday Life.

VK Side table 01 - Ville Kokkonen

Design is not merely about shaping forms—it is deeply intertwined with the social context, cultural background, nature, and human activity of its time. Ville Kokkonen, who firmly believes in this philosophy, approaches his work with a clear perspective, focusing on functionality and practicality.

Kokkonen's sketches explore the many ways the VK Side Table 01 can be freely and flexibly arranged within a living space—not only in room corners, but also in bedrooms, on terraces, or alongside other furniture, offering a variety of inspiring possibilities.

When asked to design for MAS, Kokkonen first turned his attention to the forests of Japan. Although Finland, his home country, also boasts vast woodlands, the harsh climate limits the tree species mainly to pine, spruce, and birch. In contrast, he was struck by the diversity of Japanese forests, where each tree seems to carry its own story. Among them, hinoki (Japanese cypress) stood out, not only for its quality but also for the spiritual purity it represents—used for centuries in shrines and temples, hinoki holds a deep cultural reverence.

With these reflections in mind, Kokkonen sought to create something that showcased the dignified presence of hinoki while remaining open and unobtrusive in a living space—something practical, beautiful, and spatially considerate. After many studies and iterations, the result was the VK Side Table 01. Its triangular shape allows it to nestle neatly into corners, making it ideal for tidying up interiors or creating eye-catching focal points. Designed with a height of 440 mm, it pairs well with chairs, sofas, or even as a bedside table.

While the triangular point fits perfectly into a corner for use as a side table, placing the long edge along a wall offers a fresh impression. Also well-suited for small cafés or boutique interiors.

Weighing just 7.5 kg, it's lightweight enough to move around effortlessly, adapting to changing moods or settings. To emphasize the soft, calming feel of hinoki, the tabletop edges are gently rounded. The legs, too, are carved into an oval cross-section, harmonizing with the tabletop's form and adding to the table's inviting presence.
